De cijfers blijken uit een een antwoord van de Commissie op vraag van sp.a-europarlemenslid Saïd El Khadraoui. Het gaat om voorlopige cijfers omdat enkele landen - waaronder België - nog geen definitieve gegevens hebben doorgegeven voor het laatste kwartaal. In 2008 waren er nog 1.220.000 ongevallen met letsels. Daarbij vielen 39.000 doden. "Ondanks de daling van 9% in het aantal dodelijke ongevallen en bijna 6% in het totale aantal ongevallen blijven er te veel ongevallen gebeuren op onze wegen," zegt Khadraoui. "Ten opzichte van 2001 is het aantal dodelijke slachtoffers gedaald met 35%. Dat is goed, maar nog steeds onder de doelstelling van 50%. Europa moet nieuwe doelen stellen en daar een concreet actieplan aan koppelen met grensoverschrijdende boetes en een systeem waarbij de dichtst bijzijnde hulpdienst automatisch gealarmeerd wordt wanneer een airbag geactiveerd wordt bij een ongeval."
